Werribee Mercy Hospital - Werribee

Werribee Mercy Hospital is a general community hospital of 200 beds located 25 minutes from the Melbourne CBD.  Werribee is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Australia.  It is a public hospital campus of Mercy Health and offers maternity & neonatal services, general surgery, general medical, palliative care, day chemotherapy, renal dialysis, allied health services, hospital in the home, mental health services, rehabilitation programs, and a 24 hour emergency department, all in modern and comfortable surroundings.

Werribee Mercy Hospital opened in 1993.  It is currently undergoing rapid expansion and redevelopment in order to meet the increasing demand for health services in the region.  In 2005 the hospital completed a $10 million upgrade.  Improvements included a new Emergency Department, Palliative Care Centre and Operating Theatres.   Our nurses and midwives enjoy being involved in planning for the growth and re-development of the hospital which will soon include a new short stay unit, special care nursery and maternity services and a proposed intensive care or high dependency unit.

Clinical education and professional development is supported by a team of highly experienced educators and clinical support nurses.  A clinical skills centre utilises simulation tools and manikins to provide clinical teaching in a safe, non-threatening environment.

In 2010 we commenced an affiliation with the University of Notre Dame in which we will be hosting their Melbourne Clinical School which will cater for 40 medical students.

The hospital employs over 900 staff and is busy, modern and provides a wide variety of current clinical experience.  However, it also maintains a friendly, community atmosphere where all staff are valued members of the team.  Our excellent retention rates are indicative of high levels of job satisfaction and a “feeling of belonging”. The physical environment is modern, light and all at ground level.  Wards and staff areas open onto garden filled courtyards.

General Nursing: Several units provide general nursing care in general surgery, general medical, palliative care, day chemotherapy, and hospital in the home.  Planning is underway for a proposed high dependency or intensive care unit.
The Childbirth Centre is a 24 bed integrated unit where midwives provide antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care utilizing a holistic approach to women and their carers.

The current birth rate is 2000 per year, and this is expected to increase as we expand and develop the unit with the introduction of a team midwifery model and additional beds. The Victorian Government has delivered $14 million to Werribee Mercy Hospital to address increasing demand for maternity services.  Building has commenced on a new purpose designed and expanded maternity and special care nursery services delivering 8 additional obstetric beds and 4 additional special care nursery cots in state-of-the art facilities.

In addition to our inpatient services midwives work in the ‘Team Midwifery Model of care, pregnancy booking clinic, antenatal education  pregnancy day stay, breastfeeding support services,  midwifery in the home, and rotate to the attached 12 cot Level 2 (high acuity) Special Care Nursery.

Midwives are supported by a midwifery educator, clinical support midwives  and Lactation Consultants within the unit. An extensive orientation program and access to study days, inservices and seminars with varied educational programs is offered.

The Emergency Department has approximately 35,000 presentations annually, ranging from paediatric to adult emergencies. It moved to a new 23 bed department in 2005 and comprises three resuscitation cubicles, cardiac monitoring area, procedure and assessment cubicles and separate triage areas.  A new Emergency Department Short Stay unit will be commissioned in mid 2010 and will include 10 paediatric and adult beds.

The Operating Suite consists of 4 theatres and provides a wide variety of surgery to on average 7500 patients annually including General, Gynaecology, Obstetrics, ENT, Urology, Plastics, Orthopaedics, Oral and Endoscopy.

Ambulatory Care includes a 6 chair renal dialysis unit, hospital in the home, day chemotherapy unit, day medical service, and chronic disease management service.
